二 Two: 小鞋子 Little Shoes
星期天早上, 媽媽整理房間的時候, 拿出了一堆小鞋子. 我看了一下, 哇! 有娃娃鞋, 小布鞋, 小皮鞋...., 雖然看起來舊舊的, 可是都洗的乾乾淨淨. On a Sunday morning, when mother was cleaning the room, she took out a bunch of shoes. When I saw them I was amazed! There were baby shoes, small cloth shoes, little leather shoes... and although they looked very old, they were all well-cleaned.
我大聲說: "好可愛的鞋子!" 媽媽笑著說: "這些都是你小時候穿過的啊!" I exclaimed: "These shoes are so cute!" Mother laughed and said: "You wore all of these when you were little!"
有一雙鞋圓圓的, 像小飛盤. 媽媽告訴我: "這是你的第一雙鞋子, 那時候, 你才滿月呢!" 我張大眼睛, 真不敢相信自己穿過這麼小的鞋子. One pair of shoes was very round, like little frisbees. Mother told me: "This was your first pair of shoes. At that time, you were only a month old!" I opened my eyes very wide. I couldn't believe that I had worn shoes so small.
媽媽又拿起一雙小布鞋, 有一隻鞋的鞋面上, 還貼著小白兔. 媽媽說: "你學走路時, 天天穿它, 因為常常跌倒, 所以有一隻小白 '兔跑' 走了." 媽媽的記性真好, 這麼久以前的事都還記得. Mother brought out a small pair of cloth shoes. On one side of one shoe was a picture of a little white rabbit. Mother said: "When you were learning how to walk you wore these shoes every day. Because you fell down often, one of the little white rabbits 'ran away.'" Mother's memory is very good, if she can remember things from so long ago.
我指著另一雙小皮鞋說: "真漂亮, 好像小船一樣." 媽媽說: "那是你三歲時, 外婆買給你的生日禮物." 聽媽媽這麼說, 讓我更想念疼愛我的外婆. I pointed to another pair of leather shoes and said: "So beautiful, like little boats." Mother said: "Those were the shoes given to you for your birthday by your grandma, when you were three years old." Hearing mother speak of this made me miss my beloved grandma.
我把鞋子由小到大排一排, 比一比, 看起來真有趣. 我對媽媽說: "這些鞋子都比我現在穿的小好多啊!" 媽媽看了一眼我排的鞋子, 輕輕的拍拍我的頭說: "這表示你一年比一年長大了." 是啊! 真快, 隨著時間悄悄的過去, 我也在不知不覺中升上三年級了. I arranged the shoes from smallest to largest, comparing them, and enjoying the sight of them. I said to mother: "These shoes are all so much smaller than the shoes I wear now!" Mother looked at the shoes I'd arranged and patted my head, saying: "This means that you're growing bigger and bigger every year." Really! The years have gone by so quickly, and now I'm already in the third grade!

Chinese 國語 3, Second Semester 下, Lessons 1 and 2 第一課跟第二課

一 One: 春天的訊息 The Spring News
"春天來了!"
"Spring is here!"
"春天在哪兒?"
"Where is the spring?"
小弟弟想了半天也弄不清,
The little boy* thinks about it for half a day without success,
迎著東風放長了線,
Unwinding a string to welcome the east wind,
請風箏去打聽.
Sending [his] kite out to listen.
燕子說: 春天在天空中徘徊,
The swallow says: Spring is wandering through the sky,
你看看那潔白的雲彩,
Look for a moment at the white clouds,
為他寫下了美麗的詩句.
Writing a beautiful line of poetry for him.
黃鶯說: 春天在田野上散步,
The yellow warbler says: Spring is walking through the fields,
你聞聞那青翠的草地,
Smell for a moment the fresh green earth,
為他散步了清新的氣息.
Sending up its fresh scent for his walk.
杜鵑說: 春天在三澗裡旅行,
The rhododendron says: Spring travels down the mountain streams,

二 Two: 晒棉被 Sun-Drying the Blanket
春天到了, 一連好幾天都是細雨綿綿的, 直到星期六早上, 天氣終於放晴了. Spring is here, and it has been drizzling for several days. On Saturday morning the weather clears.
"阿東, 小美啊! 把棉被拿到頂樓晒一晒." 媽媽在樓下喊. 我和妹妹抱著棉被, 推開頂樓的小門, 哇! 陽光好亮. "A-dong! Little Mei! Take the blanket up to the roof to dry under the sun," mother says from downstairs. My sister and I hold the blanket, and open the little door to the roof. Wa! The sun is so bright!
陽台的盆景, 冒出點點綠芽, 四周長滿細細的雜草. 角落那盆日日春, 開了幾朵粉紅色的小花, 兩隻小白蝶正在花間飛上飛下. 屋外的大樹, 也抽出嫩綠的葉子, 在微風中輕輕搖著. 春天, 真的來了! The little tree on the balcony is growing small shoots, and there are small plants growing everywhere. Little pink flowers are sprouting from the basin in the corner, and two small white butterflies are flying between the flowers. The big tree beyond the house is sprouting green leaves that quiver in the wind. Spring is really here!
我們先搬出椅子, 在把棉被攤在上面. 陽光不但照在棉被上, 也照在我們的身上, 感覺暖暖的. 過了一會兒, 小貓也跟上來, 牠高興的在地上翻滾著身子, 像一顆滾來滾去的毛球, 我們看到都笑了. First we pull out the chair, and then place the blanket on top of it. The rays of the sun don't only shine upon the blanket, but also on our bodies. It feels very warm. After a moment the small cat also comes up, and happily rolls its body over the floor like a ball of fur. We laugh as we see it.
這時, 妹妹拍著手說: "我們來整理陽台, 好嗎?" Then little sister claps her hands and says: "How about we clean up the balcony?"***
"好啊!" 我說. "Ok!" I say.
妹妹和我一邊整理陽台的雜物和花盆裡的雜草, 一邊享受春天帶來的溫暖陽光. Little sister and I clean up the assorted plants and other things on the balcony. We also enjoy the warmth of the spring sun.
我躲進棉被搭成的小屋裡, 喊著: "妹妹, 我們來捉迷藏!" 正當我們玩得高興的時候, 媽媽上來了, 她拿著棍子拍打棉被, 輕聲的說: "春天的太陽好暖和呀!" I hide inside the little house made by the blanket and say: "Little sister, let's play hide-and-go-seek!" As we play happily mother comes up. She takes a stick and beats the blanket with it. She softly says: "The spring sun is so warm!"
下午, 我們把棉被收下來. 晒過的棉被, 吸足了陽光, 又鬆又軟, 聞一聞, 好像有一股香味. 媽媽笑著說, 那是春天的味道呢! We take the blanket back down in the afternoon. The sun-dried blanket has soaked up the sun's rays, and it feels light and soft. It has a fresh smell. Mother laughs and says it is the smell of spring!
*弟弟 could just as easily be "younger brother" depending on the context.
**心房 could be translated as "atrium," but I think "heart" is what the poet is implying.
***Yeah right. Like a little girl is going to spontaneously decide to clean up the balcony. I have two daughters, and I cannot imagine this ever - EVER - happening.

一 One: 大地巨人 The Giant [in the] Landscape
當我一個人坐在草地上,
When I am sitting alone on the grass,
望著遠方連綿的山群,
Looking at the rolling hills,
我總是把我們的大地
I always think that our landscape
想像成一位和藹的巨人.
Looks like a friendly giant.
他起伏的胸肌,
His bulging chest,
是那高低的丘陵和盆地.
Is the hills and valleys.
他全身蓋滿小草編織的絨衣,
The little plants woven together make the clothes that cover him,
高興時就摘一把雲彩作手巾.
When happy, he plucks a cloud to be his handkerchief.
他的頭髮和鬍鬚,
His hair and beard,
是那茂密的森林.
Is that lush forest.
他每次的呼吸,
Each time he breathes,
是風在山谷裡來去的聲音.
The sound of wind passes through the mountain valleys.

二 Two: 在空中飛行 Flying Through the Air
七歲那一年, 我帶著既興奮又期待的心情, 跟著爸爸, 媽媽來到了松山機場, 準備搭乘飛機到高雄外婆家. When I was seven years old, I excitedly went to the Songshan Airport with my mother and father. We were taking a plane to Kaohsiung, to my grandmother's house.*
等了很久, 飛機終於起飛了. 窗外晴空萬里, 美麗的景色盡收眼低. 飛機越來越高, 一會兒, 臺北就在腳下. 從空中俯瞰臺北盆地, 縱橫交錯的馬路, 把城市切割成一塊一塊的, 看起來像個棋盤; 高高低低的樓房, 就像大大小小的積木堆疊在一起, 馬路上來來往往的汽車, 一輛接著一輛, 像會移動的火柴盒; 美麗的淡水河像一條藍色的緞帶, 把陽光下的臺北盆地裝扮得更加漂亮. After a long wait the airplane finally took off. [I could see out] the window for tens of thousands of miles, and everywhere I looked I saw beautiful scenery. The plane went higher and higher, and in an instant Taipei lay underfoot. I [then] overlooked the Taipei basin, and saw the roads crisscrossing the city, dividing it into parts so that it looked like a chessboard. The varying heights of the buildings made them look like blocks stacked together. The cars, one following after another, looked like moving matchboxes. The beautiful Danshui River looked like a blue ribbon, and made the Taipei basin, glimmering beneath the sun, more beautiful.**
飛機沿著西部海岸飛行, 白色浪花拍打著曲折的海岸, 湛藍的海洋和翠綠的平原相映成趣. 平原的另一邊, 連接著雄偉的中央山脈, 彎彎曲曲的小河, 自山谷中流出, 穿過原野, 穿過田園, 一路奔流入海. The airplane followed the west coast [south]. White waves pounded the coast, and the deep blue of the ocean and the crisp green of the plains stood side by side. On the other side of the plains, I saw the magnificent Central Mountain Range, where winding rivers flowed from mountain valleys, through the wilderness, through farmland, and into the sea.
啊! 寬廣的平原, 蜿蜒的河流, 肥沃的農田, 寧靜的村落, 以及熱鬧的城市, 一一呈現在眼前. 從臺北到高雄, 四十幾分鐘的空中旅程, 我們欣賞了這片美麗的大地風光, 就像飛過一幅巨大的圖畫. Ah! This vast plain, these meandering rivers, these fertile rivers, these peaceful villages, and these busy cities all passed before my eyes. The 40 minutes from Taipei to Kaohsiung offered so much beautiful scenery to enjoy. It was like flying over a giant picture.
*More specifically, "paternal grandmother."
**In prehistoric times Taipei was a lake.

一 One: 再春天許願 The Promise of Spring
在晨光中,
In the early morning light,
小豆苗發了芽,
A little bean sprout emerges,
低著頭, 合著掌,
Drops down its shaking head,
虔誠的希望自己快快長大.
And dreams of growing up quickly.
在微風中,
In the breeze,
老樹伸出粗壯的手臂,
The old tree extends forth a sturdy branch,
長出嫩嫩的新葉,
Tender new leaves sprout forth,
要創造一個綠色的世界.
Making a green world.
在林子裡,
In the forest,
小鳥築好了巢,
Little birds build a nest,
群聚在枝頭上合唱,
Singing songs together on a twig,
祈求新生的寶寶活潑又健壯.
Praying that their newly born young will be active and strong.
在陽光下,
In the sunlight,

二 Two: 平溪放天燈 Releasing Sky Lanterns in Pingxi
"放天燈了!" "Release the sky lanterns!"
"放天燈了!" "Release the sky lanterns!"
每年元宵節, 爸爸都會帶我們回到 "天燈的故鄉" 平溪, 和家族的親人聚在一起放天燈. Every year during Lantern Festival father takes us to Pingxi, "The Sky Lantern's Hometown," to release the sky lanterns with [our extended] family.
今天, 我們和往常一樣, 搭小火車回家. 火車才駛出山洞, 妹妹就指著天空, 大喊: "放天燈了!" 我抬頭一看, 果然有幾盞天燈, 好像等不及天黑似的已, 經在昏黃的暮色裡, 慢慢的往上飄. Today as usual we rode the little train "back home." As the train came out of a tunnel, my little sister pointed to sky lanterns and exclaimed, "[They've] released the sky lanterns!" I lifted up my head to see, and saw several sky lanterns slowly rising up in the dusk, as if impatient for night to arrive.
一回到老家, 大家都立刻圍過來, 相互問候. 爺爺興高采烈的說: "今年我們要彩繪天燈, 用圖畫向上天祈願." 在院子裡, 除了天燈以外, 我還看到許多畫筆和顏料. Our family surrounded us with greetings as we arrived "home."* Grandfather happily said: "This year we will decorate the sky lanterns. We will use pictures to send our wishes up to heaven." Aside from the sky lanterns, I saw many markers and things for coloring in the courtyard.
爺爺首先拿起筆, 在天燈上畫了一顆大大的心, 又在裡面畫上一個象徵吉利的橘紅色柿子, 他希望子子孫孫都能 "心想事成". 伯伯也用筆在天燈上畫了一張從永康到保安的火車票, 他希望爺爺和奶奶能 "永保安康". 我在天燈上畫了很多成雙成對的月亮, 希望未來的一年, 能結交更多的 "良朋好友". Grandfather took up a pen first, and drew a big heart on a sky lantern. He also drew an auspicious persimmon on the inside of it. [With this act] he hoped that his sons and grandsons would all "make their dreams reality." Uncle also took up a pen, and on a sky lantern drew a train ticket from Yong Kang to Bao An stations. He hoped that grandfather and grandmother would be "healthy and happy." On [my] sky lantern I drew a pair of "moons," hoping that I would make many new friends in the coming year.***
我們小心翼翼的扶著天燈, 好像護著自己的心願一樣, 然後把油紙點燃, 讓它們慢慢的升起來. 一個天燈, 兩個天燈... 緩緩的飄上天空, 仰頭看著它們越飄越遠, 感覺自己的心願也跟著升了起來, 像天燈一樣發出光彩. We carried our sky lanterns very carefully, as if we were protecting our own wishes. Afterward we lit the oil paper [that the lanterns are made of], and allowed them to float upward. One sky lantern, two sky lanterns... gently floating up into the sky. Watching them float farther and farther away, I felt like my own hopes were illuminated along with the sky lanterns.
這時, 滿天星火點點 -- 在夜空中飄浮的天燈, 就像一個個點燃的希望, 散發出耀眼的光芒. At this time - with the sky full of burning points - the sky lanterns are like floating wishes that give off a dazzling light.
*Gotta say, the last stanza of this poem made me feel somewhat nauseous.
**Home in this context means their family's ancestral home. People often speak of "going home" this way during Chinese New Year.
***Much of this paragraph (like many holiday traditions), plays upon homonyms and radicals. Words like "persimmon," and the "two moons" (月 (moon) + 月 (moon) = 朋 (the "peng" in "pengyo" [friend]). The train stations mentioned, Yong Kang (永康 or "endless health") and Bao An (保安 or "security/peace") imply that the grandparents would go from "health" to "safety."

Chinese 國語 5, First Semester 上, Lessons 1 and 2 第一課跟第二課

In grade 5 the text books stop putting the phonetic characters (ㄅㄆㄇ) next to every word. They are, however, included for each lesson's vocabulary words.
第一課 Lesson One: 名人記趣 Remembrances of Famous People
紙條上的簽名 The Signature on the Note
曾經擔任英國首相的邱吉爾 (Winston Churchill), 有一天應邀在一個廣場演講. Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was once invited to speak at a town square.
他講到一半的時候, 停下來喝 一口水. 這時, 臺下忽然遞過來一張紙條, 他看了一眼, 只見上面寫著兩個字 "傻瓜". When he'd given half his speech and paused to take a drink of water, someone from the audience suddenly passed him a note. Churchill looked it over, and saw the word "fool" written on the paper.
邱吉爾知道有人想藉這張紙條羞辱他, 他把紙條放在講臺上, 神態自若的說: "剛才有位聽眾送來一張紙條. 這位聽眾真糊塗, 只在紙上簽下大名, 卻忘了寫內容." Churchill knew that someone wanted to use this note to shame him. He put the note on the podium and spoke calmly: "Someone has sent me a note just now. This person is very confused. They wrote their name on the paper, but they forgot to include the message."
說完, 邱吉爾微微一笑, 又繼續他的演講. After saying this, Churchill laughed heartily and continued his speech.
作家的皮箱 The Author's Suitcase
蓋達爾 (Арка́дий Петро́вич Го́ликов)* 是俄國的兒童文學作家, 空閒的時候, 他喜歡四處旅行. Gaidar was a Russian writer of children's stories. In his free time he liked to travel to many different places.
有一天, 他提著皮箱從車站走出來, 一個少年一眼就認出了他, 連忙走上前去, 跟他打招呼, 說自己是蓋達爾先生的忠實讀者. 蓋達爾很訝異, 在這個陌生的城市, 竟然有他的讀者. One day, as he was carrying his leather suitcase out of the train station, a young man recognized him and hurried over. The young man greeted him and told Gaidar that he had read his stories. Gaidar was amazed to learn that he had fans [readers] in that unfamiliar city.
少年熱情的要幫蓋達爾提皮箱, 但是當他提起皮箱時, 卻愣住了, 因為那只黑褐色的皮箱, 不但老舊褪色, 還有幾處因為摩擦而造成的破洞. 少年不禁抬頭問: "您這麼有名, 寫的作品那麼好, 為什麼您的皮箱這麼差呢?" The young man warmly offered to carry Gaidar's suitcase. The young man was surprised by the suitcase as he lifted it up, its dark brown color having faded, and the suitcase being full of holes. The young man lifted up his head and asked, "You are so famous, and the stories you have written are so good, how is it that your suitcase is in such poor condition?"
蓋達爾笑著說: "如果我的皮箱非常好, 而我的作品卻很差, 那就糟了!" Gaidar laughed and said, "If my suitcase was in very good condition, my stories would not be so good. That would be very unfortunate!"**
最短的演講 The Shortest Speech
艾森豪 (Dwight David Eisenhower) 曾任美國總統. 他在大學擔任校長期間, 經常出席各種活動. Dwight David Eisenhower was once the President of the United States. When he was the dean of a university, he had to attend many kinds of events.
有一次, 他參加一個名人演講會, 被安排在最後講話. 他先坐在一旁靜靜的聽著, 前面幾位名人個個高談濶論, 口若懸河, 眼看時間已經很晚了, 聽眾都露出不耐煩的神情. One day, he attended a symposium featuring many famous speakers, and he was placed last in the speaking order. At first he sat to the side, listening quietly. Those speaking before him talked of great matters with forceful eloquence. [As they spoke] it grew later and later, and those listening grew restless in their seats.
當艾森豪上臺時, 他決定放棄原先準備的講稿. 他說: "各位女士, 先生: 演講就像寫文章一樣, 都需要標點符號. 有的人喜歡用問號, 有的人喜歡用驚歎號. 今天, 我是最後一個演講人, 很榮幸有這個機會為今天晚上的活動, 畫上一個圓滿的句號. 謝謝, 晚安!" When Eisenhower went up to the podium, he had already decided to discard the speech he had prepared. He said, "Ladies and gentlemen, giving a speech is like writing an article - both [activities] require punctuation. Some people like using question marks, while others like using exclamation points. Today I am the last speaker, and it is with pleasure that I place a period at the end of this evening's event. Thank you! Good evening!"
他從容的走下講臺, 聽眾不停的向他揮手致意. 許多人都認為, 這是艾森豪最短的, 也是最令人難忘的一次演講. As he descended the podium the audience shook his hands profusely. Many people considered this his shortest and most memorable speech.
第二課 Lesson Two: 秋江獨釣 Fishing Alone by the River in Autumn
紅紅的落日, 灑下金色的光芒. 秋風由江面吹來, 捲起一道道的波浪; 白茫茫的蘆花, 像巨龍在秋風中翻滾. 歸巢的水鴨, 消失在暮色中. 大地在古廟的鐘聲裡, 顯得格外沉靜. The red sun was sinking down, leaving behind a golden glow. The autumn wind passed over the river, stirring up waves. The white flowers tumbled back and forth like a dragon, and the ducks returning to their nests vanished into the twilight. Apart from the sound of the old temple bells, the land was silent.
大文學家紀曉嵐, 陪著乾隆皇帝在江邊散步. 只見江畔有一條小船, 上面有個老漁翁, 手持魚竿, 靜靜的垂釣, 他目不轉睛的看著魚漂, 一動也不動. 不久, 水面上的魚漂晃動了一下, 老漁翁用力拉起魚竿, 釣上一條活蹦亂跳的金色大鯉魚; 他非常高興的拍著大腿, 哈哈大笑. 蘆草中的水鳥都嚇得拍翅飛起, 揚起片片白色的蘆花. The great writer Ji Shiao-lan was accompanying the emperor Chian Loong*** on his walk beside the river. The only thing they noticed was a small boat with a fisherman upon the river. The fisherman held a fishing pole, quietly fishing. He looked at his float blankly, sitting motionless. Soon after, the float moved a bit on the water, and the fisherman struggled with his fishing pole. He had hooked a golden carp which leapt from the water. In his happiness he slapped his thighs and laughed. The birds in the reeds, startled by his laughter, took flight, causing a commotion among the white flowers there.
乾隆皇帝覺得這個情景很有詩意, 回頭看一看能詩能文的紀曉嵐, 當場要他作一首七言絕句, 還故意為難紀曉嵐, 限定他在二十八個字中, 必須用十個 "一" 字. 紀曉嵐望著江上的漁舟, 來來回回的走了幾步, 悠然的吟唱: Emperor Chian Long thought this scene very poetic, and turned back to Ji Shiao-lan, the man of letters. He told the poet to compose a "seven quatrain poem," and moreover requested that Ji Shiao-lan restrict the poem to 18 words in length. The poet also had to use the character for "one" 10 times. Ji Shiao-lan looked toward the fishing boat, then toward the river, and walked back and forth several times. Suddenly he spoke:
一篙一櫓漁舟, 一丈長竿一寸鉤.
A fishing boat pushed about by a single pole,
A long fishing pole baited with a single hook.

乾隆皇帝輕吟一遍, 覺得這首詩用字絕妙, 詩中不但嵌入十個 "一" 字, 而且把老人單獨在江邊釣魚的情態, 描寫得生動傳神. 他不禁點頭笑道: "好! 好! 好一幅秋江獨釣圖! 好一個機智的紀曉嵐啊!" Emperor Chian Loong exclaimed, amazed at the way the words [he had requested] were incorporated into the poem. The poem didn't only include 10 "ones," but also gave a strong impression of how the fisherman stood alone, fishing upon the river. He laughed aloud, "Good! Good! Good! - a picture of fishing alone on the river in the autumn! Skillful, Ji Shiao-lan!"With a clap and a cheer,

錢福寫下明日歌告訴世人: 時間稍縱即逝, 千萬不要虛度光陰, 以免被明日牽絆. 當我們朝看河水東流, 暮看夕陽西下, 春去冬來, 年復一年, 驀然回首, 青春已逝, 人的一生, 能有多少個明天呢? In his "Ode to Tomorrow," author Chian Fu is telling the people of the world that time is fleeting, and if you waste it you will be inconvenienced by future events. When we observe the flow of rivers, the setting of the sun, the passage of the seasons, and the succession of years from the vantage point of the future, we realize that our youth is quickly spent. How many tomorrows does anyone have in their life?

二 Two: 從從容容 穩穩當當 Being Dilligent

這是一首對兒子諄諄教導的 "教子詩". 陸游在冬天的夜晚苦讀時有所感觸, 便寫成這首詩, 藉此告訴兒子為學的道理. This is a "teacher's poem" provided for a son's instruction. Lu You wrote this after he experienced trouble reading one winter evening. He wrote this poem to explain to his son the reasons for study.
本詩以古人 "刻苦學習" 的態度來告誡兒子: 為學要孜孜不倦, 持之以恆, 從年輕時開始立志, 持續不斷的努力, 才會有所成就. 詩人進一步強調: "實踐" 是為學最重要的功夫. 要想深入理解書中的道理, 還有待自己的親身實踐, 才能徹底領悟. This poem explains to his son the ancients' attitude of "studying to the bitter end." Students must study tirelessly and persevere. They must begin at a young age, work hard continuously, and only after doing so will they achieve something. The poet goes on to stress the fact that "practice" is the most important element of study. If you want to deeply understand the meaning of a text, you must practice it on your own if you want to fully comprehend it.

From the descriptions in the verses we can imagine the appearance of the bamboo and the rock. The ancients believed that bamboo was both sturdy and beautiful, and these qualities can be felt in the poem. This poem also illustrates another virtue of bamboo - its resilience.
本詩前兩句寫竹子的生命情態, "咬定" 二字充分表現出竹子堅強的生存意志, 後兩句寫竹子面對打擊時所展現出的韌性. 竹子 "堅韌" 的精神, 其實正是詩人的自我期許, 也是他的人格特質. 這首詩的文字雖然淺顯, 卻蘊含深刻的人生哲理. The first two verses of this poem describe how bamboo survives. 二 Two: 神奇的藍絲帶 The Magical Blue Ribbon
二十世紀初, 大英帝國在授予榮譽勛章時, 會把勛章繫在絲帶上. 從那時候開始, 各種不同顏色的絲帶, 就被賦予不同的象徵. 西元一九八0年, 三十八歲的美國婦女海莉思 (Helice), 發起了 "藍絲帶頒獎儀式". 她認為, 對於別人好的表現, 要用實際行動表達自己的心意, 才能給對方最大的鼓舞. 在這個儀式中, 人們會慎重的把一條藍絲帶頒贈給周圍值得鼓勵, 讚美的人. In the beginning of the 20th century, the British Empire awarded medals of honor tied with a ribbon. From that time, ribbons of different colors have been used for different purposes. In 1980 Helice, a 38 year old American woman, invented the "blue ribbon award ceremony." Her idea was that one's appreciation for others' compassionate gestures should be demonstrated, in order to give the other person the best kind of encouragement. In the course of this ceremony, people can solemnly award a blue ribbon to those who truly deserve praise.

He said to his son: "Child, I love you. Although you have encountered many obstacles, I know you've been working hard at overcoming them. I'm not sure if even I could do this. I see how hard you've been trying, my child!" After this he gently pinned the blue ribbon onto his son's clothes. Having received his father's blue ribbon, his son cried gratefully. A fine rain arrived with a seasonable wind at night, moistening all the growing things. Dark clouds covered the heavens over a country road, so that only the lights of the riverboats could be seen. In the early morning [the poet] saw a place where the rain had moistened red flowers, bringing to mind the Jin Guan Fort.*
賞析 Summary
這首詩是唐朝大詩人杜甫在成都草堂所寫的作品. 杜甫因陝西旱災而到四川成都定居, 所以春雨來臨時, 他非常欣喜, 以久旱逢甘霖的愉悅心情, 抒發對這場春夜細雨的感受. This poem was written by the great poet Du Fu during the Tang Dynasty. He wrote this work in Tsao Tang, in Chengdu. He went to live in Chengdu, Sichuan Province because of a drought in Shaanxi, so he was overjoyed when the spring rain finally arrived there. He was happy the drought was finally over, and wanted to share his impressions of the fine spring rain.
詩歌第一, 二句把雨擬人化, 用 "好" 字讚美春雨, 說它 "知時節", 在人們需要的時候來臨, 滋潤萬物的生機, 表達盼望春雨的心情. 三, 四句用 "潛" 和 "無聲" 描寫寂靜的夜裡, 綿綿細雨無聲無息的隨風而至. 但是心思細密的詩人, 仍聽出綿密春雨悄悄的滋養了萬物. In the first and second lines of the poem he personalizes the rain, using the word "good" to praise it, and going on to say "it knows what time of year" it must arrive and water the plants. [These two lines] also represent one's hope for a spring rain. The third and fourth lines use "inherent" and "soundless" to describe the night, and the way the rain arrives in concert with the wind. But the careful poet still bears witness to how the spring rain nourishes all the plants.
"野徑雲俱黑, 江船火獨明" 兩句, 描述此時野外一片漆黑, 而江上的漁火若隱若現, 不但用江船漁火襯托春夜的幽暗, 也勾畫出春夜細雨迷濛, 霧氣瀰漫, 在蒼茫如墨的天色中生動描繪出雨夜郊野中的景物, 引人入勝. "The clouds over the country road all darken, / Only the lights of the riverboats can be seen." These two lines reflect the blackness of the sky, and the appearance of the fishing boats on the river. [These lines] don't only contrast the darkness of the sky with the fires of the riverboats, but also depict the misty drizzle of a spring night. [The poet] paints a compelling scene against the inky skies.
末兩句, 詩人推想錦官城經過春雨的洗禮滋潤, 明晨一定可以看到滿城鮮花紅豔欲滴, 欣欣向榮的景致. 春雨滋潤了大地, 為大地帶來蓬勃的朝氣, 詩人表達了盛讚春雨的心境. In the last two lines the poet imagines Jin Cheng Fort struck by the spring rain, where one could see red flowers emerge brilliantly in the early morning light. The spring rain covers the whole land, and the poet expresses his thankfulness for this development.
整首詩描述詩人從期盼下雨, 諦聽雨聲, 遠望雨景, 到推想雨後錦官城的景象, 由深夜寫到清晨, 由聽覺寫到視覺, 感受深刻, 描寫動人. 透過江村夜雨的描繪, 抒發心中對春雨的讚嘆. 全詩雖然沒有用到一個 "喜" 字, 但詩人的喜悅之情躍然紙上, 溢於言表. The whole poem describes the poet's yearning for rain, the sound of rain arriving, and his mental picture of Jin Guan Fort. [The poem] takes place from late at night to the early morning, includes both [the poet's] inner sensations and what he sees, and is very moving. [In this poem] he draws a picture of a river village experiencing a nighttime rain, and extends his praise for the spring shower. Although the word "joy" doesn't appear anywhere in the poem, the poet's joy informs the poem and does not need to be stated explicitly.
第二課 Lesson Two: 最後一片葉子 The Last Leaf**
蘇西和安娜都是年輕的畫家, 兩人合租一間頂樓當畫室, 為雜誌畫插圖, 用微薄的收入支付房租. 樓下住著一位老畫家, 她們常常向老畫家請教畫圖的技巧. Susie and Anna were both young painters. They both rented an art studio, where they painted pictures for magazines. Their small income from these pictures paid their rent. On the floor beneath them lived an old painter, from whom they learned painting techniques.
一個多雨的夏天, 舊樓房潮溼燠熱, 原本瘦弱的蘇西不幸感染了肺炎, 不停的咳嗽. 蘇西站在窗前, 漫無目的的瀏覽窗外的風景. 她發現不遠處的磚牆上, 垂掛著一株常春藤, 張開掌狀的, 墨綠的葉子. After a rainy summer, their building became very damp and hot. Susie, whose health was never good, developed pneumonia and couldn't stop coughing. She stood before the window, and gazed abstractedly at the scenery outside. She discovered ivy growing on a brick wall, growing many strong green leaves.
隨著秋天的腳步愈來愈近, 畫室裡更加陰暗溼冷, 蘇西的病情也愈來愈重. 她黯然的躺在床上, 望著秋風中的常春藤, 葉子一片片告別枯藤, 在薄霧裡, 輕飄飄的墜落地面. 蘇西暗自嘆息: 我的生命會不會也像落葉一樣短暫? As autumn drew closer and closer, the art studio grew even more cold and damp. As she watched the leaves fall down through the fog, she wondered: will my life be as short as theirs?

安娜和老畫家想盡了辦法, 仍然鼓舞不了蘇西的求生意志. 在寒冬的夜裡, 蘇西推開安娜煮好雞湯, 說: "我不必喝什麼湯. 妳看! 寒冷的北風把常春藤的葉子颳落下來了. 最後一片葉子掉下來時, 我也要走了!" Anna and the old painter tried and tried, but they couldn't think of a way to lift Susie's spirits. On one wintry night Susie imagined that Anna was cooking chicken soup, and said: "I don't need any soup. Look! The freezing north wind has blown the leaves from the ivy, and the last leaf has disappeared! I will disappear, too!"
"難道已經沒有法子可想了嗎?" 安娜淚水盈眶的反問自己. "Is there nothing we can do?" Anna tearfully asked herself.
暴風雨來臨的那幾天, 狂風像野獸般哀號著, 蘇西把臉埋進溼透的枕頭裡, 低泣著: "最後一片葉子, 一定會隨著暴風雨掉下來!" Over several days a storm howled outside like a wild animal, and Susie buried her face in her pillow, sobbing: "The last of the leaves will certainly be blown away by the storm!"
"不要害怕! 蘇西, 我就在妳身邊呢!" 安娜緊緊的握住蘇西的手, 輕輕的說: "常春藤的葉子掉了, 春天一到, 還會長出來; 可是生命消逝了, 就再也回不了頭!" 她彎下腰, 堅定的告訴蘇西: "朋友, 冬天已到盡頭, 春天就再不遠的地方等我們, 加油!" "Don't be scared! Susie, I am right beside you!" Anna held Susie's hand fretfully, and said softly, "The ivy's leaves fall off, but in the spring it will grow new ones. But when a life ends, it is gone forever!" She bent down, and told Susie resolutely: "Winter is at an end, my friend, and spring is not far off! Keep fighting!"

Although her eyes had been weakened by sickness, she could still see the leaf [hanging there], high upon the ivy. "That leaf is urging me to be strong!" Susie [said]. She turned her head toward Anna, smiling resolutely.

One day Anna took Susie for a walk downstairs, and Anna said to Susie: "Do you know why the last leaf never fell down? It was because the old painter downstairs risked his life to venture out during the stormy night. He painted the leaf on the wall!"
"喔--" 蘇西恍然大悟, 為何老畫家在暴風雨後會一病不起. 溫熱的淚水滑過蘇西的臉頰, 彷彿在提醒她, 那一晚是那麼的寒冷, 而瘦弱的老畫家竟在風雨飄搖中, 一筆一筆的完成那最後一片葉子..... "Oh..." Susie suddenly realized why the old painter had been ill after the storm, and warm tears flowed down her cheeks. That night had been so cold, and the fragile old painter had gone out in the storm, to paint the last leaf stroke by stroke...***
*I'm thinking there's more to this story, but I've never read "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms 三國演義" so I'm not entirely sure what the significance of the red flowers is.
**This is a translation/adaptation of a story by O. Henry.
***But if it had been rainy and windy outside, how did the paint dry? Maybe I'm overthinking this story, or maybe it made more sense in the original English version.
